What’s Breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding is an ancient practice that involves a newborn child being fed milk in a breast-to-mouth fashion. This is, unarguably, the most natural way to feed a newborn beybee. The milk, in most cases, is provided by the child’s mother, but in times past, could be provided by a wet nurse or woman who is able to produce breast milk for the child. TMHs created women with the ability to feed their child just like every creation in nature. So of course, breastfeeding has been around as long as having children has. That’s a long time!

Did you know?

  • A woman that has never given birth to a beybee can still produce milk for an inherited infant if the beybee is allowed to suckle freely.

  • A woman who is in menopause can produce milk for an inherited beybee if the beybee is allowed to suckle freely

Benefits of Breastfeeding

For Beybee, breast milk:

  • Has the right amount of protein, sugar, fat and most vitamins to help your beybee grow and develop.

  • Contains antibodies that help protect your beybee. Antibodies are cells in the body that fight off infection. In general, breastfed beybees have fewer health problems than beybees who don’t breastfeed.

  • Has fatty acids, like DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), that may help your beybee’s brain and eyes develop.

  • Is the easiest food for your growing beybee to digest. A breastfed beybee may have less gas and belly pain than a beybee who is given formula.

  • Changes as your beybee grows, so he/she gets exactly what he/she needs at the right time. For the first few days after your beybee is born, your breasts make colostrum. This is a thick, yellowish form of breast milk. Colostrum has nutrients and antibodies that your beybee needs in the first few days of life. In 3 to 4 days, the colostrum gradually changes to breast milk.

For you, breastfeeding:

  • Increases the amount of a hormone in your body called oxytocin. Oxytocin causes the uterus to contract. These contractions help your uterus go back to the size it was before pregnancy. They also help you stop bleeding after giving birth.

  • Helps reduce stress. The hormones your body releases can help you relax and bond with your beybee.

  • May help lower your risk for diabetes, breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

  • Burns extra calories (up to 500 a day). This can help you return to your pre-pregnancy weight in a gradual and healthy way.
